101 Black artists living and working in Texas

The List

Update: A week ago (February 9) we asked you, our readers, to help us continue building this list. And you did! The original list of “101” didn’t include every Black artist making work in Texas (though it kicked off the conversation), and the following names are some notable omissions.

As this overall list continues to grow, please come back often, and visit the artist websites we have listed below, as well as the comments section of this article (and on our social media accounts) for the names of even more Black artists living and working Texas.

CADD x Maddrey PLLC Artist Prize 2020

The 2020 Winners

Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas and Maddrey PLLC are proud to announce the inaugural recipient of the CADD x Maddrey PLLC Artist Prize to Dallas artist Ciara Elle Bryant.

The jurors have also awarded prizes to two runner-ups, including a $1,000 prize to Hakeem Adewumi and a $500 prize to Andrea Tosten. Ragbir states, “It’s clear-- Hakeem Adewumi’s subjects trust him. And when that relationship plays out in front of the camera, combined with Adewumi’s keen sense of light and color, we all win.” On the third prize winner, Crockett states, “Tosten is an emerging artistic voice carving out a compelling interdisciplinary practice. I hope this award can serve as a small gesture of enthusiasm and support for her work.”
